In ABC Interview, Kathy Griffin Says Break With CNN’s Anderson Cooper ‘Was Difficult…That One Hurt’

Comedian Kathy Griffin, who revealed Monday that she’s undergoing surgery for lung cancer, told ABC News she developed an addiction to painkillers and contemplated suicide in the years after appearing in a photo that depicted her with a bloody mask that looked like Donald Trump’s head—a joke that cost her a regular role on CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage alongside Anderson Cooper.

“The Anderson Cooper situation was just difficult because I just loved him.

Griffin says she recovered from her addiction to painkillers only to learn that a mass she’d had for several years on one of her lungs had suddenly doubled in size.

“I’m about to lose half my lung, and by the way, can I tell you something? When you’re a comic, the doctors all wanna be funny.
