Celtics targeting former Boston players Jeff Green, Kelly Olynyk and others in free agency (report)

Boston Celtics’ Jeff Green in action during an NBA basketball game against the Philadelphia 76ers, Wednesday, Nov.

The C’s could aim for former Boston players Jeff Green, Kelly Olynyk and Avery Bradley, along with Rudy Gay and Patty Mills, when NBA free agency opens at 6 p.m.

Boston president Brad Stevens — navigating his first free agency in his new role — pointed out how young the Celtics were last season, oftentimes to their detriment.

Boston trading for the Mavs’ Josh Richardson appears to be an insurance move — and one that is likely looking more necessary as multiple reports point to an expensive Fournier price tag.

While Green was an efficient role player for the Nets, the financials there could get messy as they look to retain their superstars.

Mills, 32, also has the San Antonio connection with Udoka, but he should be a popular guard option on the market.

The key going forward for the franchise, Stevens said, is to add meaningful pieces while still affording to have some financial flexibility.

After trading Kemba Walker to the Thunder, the Celtics have a realistic path and opening to a max level contract next summer.

Stevens has navigated his first coaching search, his first major trade and his first draft as Boston’s president of basketball operations.
