Earth Day in Stratford about engaging community in environmental protection

Surrounded by music, food and art during one of the volunteer-based group’s most robust events since 2019 will be eight community organizations willing to share information about local climate-saving activities.

Two guest speakers are also lined up.

Although he’s not a natural public speaker, Tingle said Friday he appreciates the opportunity to share more details about his work overseeing the Local’s community gardens near Dufferin and Oak streets.

“We’re teaching people in our community how to grow food in a sustainable way so that we don’t have to ship it in from many kilometres ,” Tingle said.

“The time has come now where we’re sort of in a position where we need to make changes,” he added.

The very first Earth Day, a demonstration supporting the protection of the environment, took place on April 22, 1970.

According to Environmental Defence, Stratford’s event Saturday will be one of more than 50 events taking place in Ontario this weekend.

“I think it’s big,” James-Abra said.
