How do we keep people safe on Metro Vancouver transit?

Dominique Curtis of New Westminster is a factory worker and father of two teens who started an online petition to voice his fear and shock over the stabbing death of 17-year-old Ethan Bespflug on a Surrey bus last week, one of a number of violent incidents on transit recently.

Transit Police are “in the process of adding 24 more community safety officers … deployed based on crime-mapping data,” TransLink spokesman Dan Mountain said by email.

TransLink said buses are equipped with silent alarms, live radio systems, on-board security cameras and GPS trackers.

Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth said on Tuesday that his ministry is working with Transit Police, the RCMP and police unions to identify any additional gaps where additional resources are required.

Premiers from across the country are slated to meet with the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police Friday to discuss the recent spate of violence across Canada.
