The results show that McGowan had the support of 5% of the poll’s respondents, trailing Republican conservative radio talk show host Larry Elder .

The most recent poll also showed that 92% of Democratic voters planned to cast a ballot in the recall election or already had, up from 84% in June.

“What was driving those June numbers was that enthusiasm was lagging among Democratic voters,” added Greenfield.

Other polls, however, indicate a tighter race in the bid to remove Newsom.

If a majority of voters choose to remove Newsom from office, the candidate with a plurality of the votes will become California’s next governor, opening the possibility that Newsom could be replaced by someone who receives fewer votes than those cast to retain him.

Although she did not sign petitions that forced the recall vote and opposes removing Newsom from office, fellow Democrat McGowan says she launched her campaign for governor as an insurance policy against the largely Republican-led recall effort.

Tax revenues from California’s legal cannabis industry have lagged compared to projections, and the state’s illicit cannabis market continues to command a major share of sales.
